for SATB unaccompanied This work presents two contrasting yet coherent motets: The joyful 'Confirma hoc Deus', with its jubilant, melismatic motif; and the solemn 'Factus est', which features aleatoric sequences set against metred music to emphasise a reflective manner of worship. Programme Notes: bTwo Pentecost Motets were commissioned by Gordon Wignall for Westminster Cathedral Choir, to celebrate his son George's time as a chorister there. They are linked settings, 'Confirma hoc Deus' being the Offertory, and 'Factus est repente' the Communion, at Pentecost. When writing these pieces I was mindful of the unique sound and personality of Westminster Cathedral Choir (and the resonant yet clear acoustic they sing in) especially the long-breathed sostenuto that is characteristic of the trebles. Confirma hoc Deus is the terser of the two, with its shorter text; there is much bare four-part texture, with the melismatic roulades in octaves of the opening returning in an even more flamboyant way at the end. Factus est repente is more contemplative, as befits a communion motet. There are, again, a lot of long lines for the trebles, either supported by block chords from the lower voices or, at âreplete sunt omnesâ an ad lib. Murmuring and the boys also have a little moment of onomatopoeia early on, imitating the wind in overlapping evanesecent scales. The first 'Alleluia' is reworked at the end to make a quiet, restrained conclusion. Copyright Gabriel Jackson
