The earliest known copy of the original medieval rota Sumer is icumen in was discovered in Reading Abbey. The Fantasia on Sumer is icumen in for organ, by Ghislaine Reece-Trapp, was commissioned by The Berkshire Organists’ Association to celebrate their Centenary and was premiered in September 2021 at Reading Town Hall. The music begins slowly in a bagpipe style and is underpinned by a bass drone. This quickly turns into a playful and energetic series of variations upon the well-known round, building up to a joyful coda.
