‘Cruz: a Triptych-Motet to the Holy Cross’ was composed for Continuum Choir’s Lent on the Iberian Peninsula programme. It responds to spiritual themes often found in sacred music—and indeed broader religious expression—in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Spain: interiority and vivid, primary-colour emotion; the individual soul’s yearning for God; and the redemptive power of human suffering, made meaningful through the mystery of Christ’s Passion and Resurrection.

Co-commissioned by Continuum and Clare Hall, Cambridge, with support from Professor Eric Nye.

Carlos Rodríguez Otero

Queens’ College, Cambridge, where he was a choral scholar, later

singing as a Tenor Lay Clerk at St John’s College. Since 2024, he has

been Director of Music at St Edmund Hall, Oxford, and maintains an

international performing career as a choral conductor and singer.

and Oxford, and maintains a broad freelance teaching practice.
