In the absence of any original material, Geoffrey Webber's preparation of this edition has been influenced by the scholarly reconstruction of the work by John Stainer. In Stainer's words 'there is in it a quaintness, not without tenderness and devotional feeling, which recalls the style of the composer's brother Henry, by whose brilliant career and fame he was no doubt overshadowed'.
