Hugh Astons Mass Te deum laudamus and his votive antiphon Te matrem dei laudamus (RCM26) are probably the pair of compositions that he successfully submitted for the degree of Mus.B. at Oxford in 1510. Both works have the Te deum plainchant as their cantus firmus; both are conceived on a large scale; and both display typical features of Astons musical personality, especially in their ornate figuration, strong rhythmic drive and liberal attitude to dissonance.
