I have written two settings of St Basil the GreatÔÇÖs disturbing words, The Bread of the Hungry. One alternative (published by Banks) uses note clusters. The present version, in the key of C minor, provides a more fluid, tuneful reading of the text. Published in the RSCMÔÇÖs Bread of Life festival service for young voices, the aim of this setting was to create a simple, direct melody that could be underpinned by an organ part of greater harmonic complexity.The subtle chord changes in the organ (including the addition of a sharpened 7th) evoke a slightly tense, unsettled mood that reflects the disquieting sentiment expressed by St Basil: The bread which you do not use is the bread of the hungry.
