The words of New Year Carol were famously set by Benjamin Britten as part of his lovely volume of children's songs, Friday Afternoons (op. 7). My own setting is optimistic and encouraging in tone, with a tuneful, uplifting melody that I hope might raise the spirits of tired choirs at the start of the new year after the busy Christmas season.
