Howells's New Year Carol was a surprise to me. Using the traditional text also set by Benjamin Britten, this early composition is a rollicking good tune with a very lively piano accompaniment. Set for two-part equal voices, it is easy, rhythmic, and fun - and makes a fascinating contrast to the more familiar harmonic language of Howells. Gordon Appleton
