This arrangement of this famous Christmas carol (often sung in Advent, despite the text) was undertaken at the behest of the Chairman of Leicester Philharmonic Choir in 2023. It is well within the reach of most choral societies, and many smaller choirs, supported by a nimble-fingered organist. I would encourage a bright-toned, colourful, performance, with an eager sense of forward motion throughout. Be confident in entering with overlapping phrases. Sopranos should be particularly alert in b. 64 for the step up in pitch. In bb. 68 to 83, keep a strong internal pulse, with no temptation to synchronise melodic lines with others that overlap. Push through confidently in the last few bars, without a hint of slowing. An arrangement for 8-piece brass (4 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba), organ and percussion (xylophone and timpani) is also available, with the same choral parts. If using this, the choir will want to be aware of the virtuosic timpani accompaniment from b. 91 onwards.
