This verse setting was commission by St John's College, Cambridge, and first broadcast on Ash Wednesday 2006. The work for mixed voices and organ has a plain, simple, direct delivery, and may be performed using a chamber organ. Much of the writing is constrained within a quiet dynamic, so the points of climax are felt more strongly as a result. Imitation and staggered voice entries play a part in this piece, while the organ part is often still and reflective. Harmonic interest comes from linear rather than homophonic compositional techniques.
