‘Canite tuba’ is a breezy, upbeat work that reminds us of the joyful nature of Advent, not merely a penitential season. It was evidently popular in its own time, since it appears in a collection published in Nuremberg in 1590, in addition to the many reissues in Venice of the original publication. Moreover, it was given new life in the form of ‘Missa Canite tuba’, a Mass setting by Archangelo Crivelli, a singer who sang with Palestrina at the Cappella Giulia, and latterly in the Sistine Chapel Choir.
