This edition is taken from a large publication containing one hundred of Viadana’s works. This includes works for solo voice, two, three and four voices, all with the support of basso continuo. In addition to the wide range of motet texts set, there are other pieces with various applications, particularly for Vespers. For the solo voice there are some highly ornamented ‘passaggio’ cadences for psalm recitation in the falsobordone style, in addition to the more standard falsobordone settings for four voices. Polyphonic psalm settings also feature, alternating with chant verses, as do settings of the Magnificat. Moreover, there is also a florid instrumental work titled ‘Canzon Francese’ for Violin, Cornett, two Trombones and Organ, looking forwards to the developments seen in the sacred music of Monteverdi. ‘Exsultate justi’ remains his most popular work, with its light texture and joyful rhythms, exhorting the just to praise God with a variety of instruments. Its psalm text and approachable nature make it suitable for many points throughout the Church’s year. Despite the importance of the basso continuo in Viadana’s music, this is an example of a motet that can readily be performed unaccompanied without instrumental participation.
