Gaudent in Caelis is from the second of the 1585 publications that ‘Gaudent in caelis’ is taken. As the title of the source suggests, it contains a number of motets for use at points throughout the church year. Some are more specific, but others less so - ‘for the feast of many martyrs’ is the designation for this piece, for use on days when more than one martyr is celebrated. Indeed, there are other specific motet settings for individual saints and/or their various attributes (e.g. ‘Tu es Petrus’ or ‘Hic vir despiciens mundum’). However, this text celebrates the lives of the saints as a whole, and thus it would not be inappropriate to sing the motet on single-saint days or for the feast of All Saints itself.
