Francis Grier's two In Nomine settings for organ were commissioned by the BBC for performance by David Goode at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, as part of Radio 3's 'Organ Night' in May 2000. Each of these settings is intended to be preceded by a Tudor In nomine setting. The Benedictus in Tudor composer John Taverner's six-Voice Mass on the plainchant Gloria tibi Trinitas contains a four-voice setting of the words 'in nomine Domini' (In the name of the Lord). This eloquent section became popular as a stand-alone instrumental work, and was the basis of consort and keyboard works over the following 150 years. in 1526 Taverner himseld had been appointed the first Organist and Master of the Choristers of Christ Church – then known as Carinal College, having been founded by Cardinal Wolsey, and Francis Grier was himself Organist there 1981–5.
The complete work has been recorded by Tom Winpenny on the organ of St Albans Cathedral, on Willowhayne Records no. WHR051
