The published collections include madrigals etc and instrumental music as well as sacred pieces. The Fourth Set of Bookes (1618) contains twenty works of which four have sacred texts. The Sixt [sic] Set of Bookes (1624) comprises seven anthems and one secular piece.
The text of 0 Lord, of whom I do depend is taken from The Humble Suit of A Sinner by the late sixteenth-century poet and musician, William Hunnis; no fewer than ten contemporary musical settings of this text survive. East's anthem, published in The Fourth Set of Bookes, draws on material from John Mundy's version, published in 1594.
Awake and stand up is the only full anthem in The Sixt Set of Bookes. It reflects both sacred and secular influences: imitative counterpoint and quasi-antiphony on the one hand and rhythmic vigour and unexpected tonal shifts on the other.
This edition marks the first appearance in print of Awake and stand up in modern times.
