Philips' output includes motets, madrigals, keyboard and instrumental works. His motets reflect both the late sixteenth-century style with its imitative counterpoint and also newer elements such as contrasting homophonic passages and a keen sense of expressiveness and imagination. His Cantiones sacrae 'for the principal feasts of the whole year' were published in Antwerp in 1612 and comprise some sixty-nine motets. Ave verum corpus, designated 'In Festo Corporis Christi', is a characteristically attractive work reflecting the composer's spiritual devotion.
The Basso Continuo book bears the date 1617 but this may well be a misprint for 1612 (see page 7). Its inclusion as part of the set indicates that Philips was responding to new trends: he published solos, duets and trios with continuo between 1613-28. While a continuo-type accompaniment would not be out of place, the style of the music suggests unaccompanied performance.
