This collection of music has a two-fold purpose. In the first place it is designed to provide the choirs of churches using the English Hymnal with a few miniature motets which can be followed by the people in their hymn-books. Beyond that, some settings are provides for texts like the Great Advent Antiphons, the reproaches and the Haec Dies, which are liturgically necessary in a well-ordered scheme of worship but have hitherto lacked really simple music.
