Christopher Tye

Little is known about the life of Christopher Tye, with even his date of birth (c1505) being only an educated guess. He took his MusB at Cambridge in 1536 (where he also completed his doctorate in 1548) and a year later was serving as a lay clerk at King's College. In 1543, Tye was appointed Master of the Choristers at Ely Cathedral and, although the title page of his Acts of the Apostles (1553; a collection of simple anthems based on metrical texts) shows that he was a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal at the time of its publication, he retained his post there until 1561. Tye took up holy orders in 1560 and a year later he was given the living of nearby Doddington-cum-March, a position he held till his death in 1573.
