Jacob Handl

Jacob Hand – sometimes known as Jacobus Gallus – was born in Slovenia but spent most of his life in Austria and Bohemia. One of the most skilful and imaginative composers of his age, his music owes much, stylistically, to the Netherlands School. He wrote numerous secular works to Latin texts as well as 20 mass settings, but he is best remembered for his 445 motets. These include many polychoral works, such as his richly expansive eight-part setting of Ave Maria, which demonstrate a unique blend ofltalian and Netherlands styles.
