John Alcock

Born in London in 1715, John Alcock was a chorister at St Paul's Cathedral and later held organist posts in Plymouth and Reading before becoming organist of Lichfield Cathedral in 1750. He published a large quantity of both sacred and secular music, took an unusually keen interest in earlier church music, and even wrote a novel: The Life of Fanny Brown, published in 1761. This book, as well as the cathedral records and two other publications, includes a number of references to his strained relations with members of the Lichfield choir before he ceased to be organist in the early 1760s. He died in 1806 at the age of ninety-one.
