Maurice Greene

Maurice Greene was one of the outstanding musical figures in England in the first half of the eighteenth century, notwithstanding the commanding presence of Handel. He was appointed Organist of St. Paul's Cathedral, London in 1718, Professor of Music at Cambridge University (purely an honorary post at that time) in 1730 and became Master of the King's Musick in 1735. He took a keen interest in earlier music and began work on a project, which remained incomplete at his death, to publish a collection of church music including works from the Elizabethan and following periods. Although he is chiefly remembered for his sacred music he also wrote songs, more extended vocal pieces and music for keyboard.
