Michael East

Michael East was born in about 1580. He was a lay-clerk at Ely Cathedral before becoming Organist of Lichfield Cathedral, sometime between 1615 and 1618, where he remained for more than twenty years. He composed a large amount of music most of which was published. It has been suggested that he was related to the influential publisher Thomas East, and although there is no direct evidence to support this the fact that no fewer than seven volumes of music by Michael East were printed points to a special connection - particularly as East was no more than a middle-ranking composer.
