Orlande de Lassus

The Netherlands writer Orlande de Lassus was a prolific and much admired composer of both sacred and secular choral music most of which was published in his lifetime. Although his formative years were spent developing his art in Italy, he lived and worked in Munich from 1556 until his death. His output includes some 74 masses, 101 Magnificats and no fewer than 550 or so motets which display an unusually wide range of invention. His only setting of Ave Maria, published posthumously, exhibits an expressive sense of harmony and fluent counterpoint.
