Joanna Forbes L'Estrange
Joanna Forbes L’Estrange FRSCM (b.1971) is an internationally celebrated British composer, conductor and vocalist whose career began with seven years at the helm of the multi-Grammy® award-winning vocal group The Swingle Singers.
Her compositions are known for their communicative clarity, expressive warmth and strong sense of vocal line, combining a first-hand understanding of choral singing with an individual and contemporary musical voice. Text lies at the heart of her compositional approach, with settings characterised by a sensitivity to words and their meaning. Her music is performed and broadcast extensively throughout the world and has been recorded by London Voices on two albums: Heaven to Earth (SIGCD790) and Winter Light (SIGCD873). The tuneful, singable nature of her choral output has garnered a body of reviews including ‘Forbes L’Estrange seems to have been born with catchy melodies coursing through her veins’ (BBC Music Magazine), ‘a sublime blend of catchy and comforting’ (Hyperion), and ‘full of delicious ear-worms’ (Gramophone).
Among her best-selling compositions are The Mountains Shall Bring Peace, written for the coronation of King Charles III, and A Season to Sing, a revolutionary choral re-imagining of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons which became an instant global hit. Alongside composing, Joanna is an experienced choral conductor and cross-genre vocalist who performs and records widely in both choral and solo contexts. In recognition of her contribution to church choral music, Joanna Forbes L’Estrange was appointed an Honorary Fellow of the Royal School of Church Music in 2025.
