Large numbers of new churches were built in Britain in the 18th and 19th centuries. In the 18th century, worship was very different from how it is today. Holy Communion was celebrated perhaps only three times a year. The main service of the day was Morning Prayer, usually with a very long sermon. For this reason, churches of this period had large pulpits, usually in a central position. The top deck of the pulpit was the only place from which every person in the building could be seen!
