Music for the organ
The most famous composer, who wrote superb music for the instrument, is Johann Sebastian Bach.
There are many organ composers who you might have heard of (maybe from singing choral music which they written), such as Byrd, Purcell, Mendelssohn, Liszt, Brahms, Elgar and plenty of more recent and living composers.
As well as for solo playing, in churches the organ is also used to accompany choirs and congregations in anthems and hymns.
Listening to the organ
If you want to see what playing the organ involves and to hear it as a musical instrument, perhaps you might offer to turn the pages of the organist’s music after the service? (After all, his or her hands and feet will probably be quite busy as they play!)
You might want to buy some inexpensive single organ tracks off a music website to listen further. Here are just a few suggestions to get you started:
