                                                                  The singing church
a brief history
Since the earliest times, there have been singers in our churches. The first Christians sang in the synagogues and naturally continued to sing when separate Christian churches were established. You will remember our Lord and His disciples sang a hymn together on the night before the Crucifixion.
It was not long before schools were attached to churches in which boys were taught singing. Indeed, in the later middle ages, the monks and teachers in monasteries and schools were largely responsible for the way in which our music in the Western World developed.
