A major sixth is the interval between the first and sixth notes of a major scale. In the scale of D major, D is the first note and B is the sixth note.

A minor sixth is the interval between the first and sixth notes of a harmonic minor scale. (For more about harmonic minor scales, see page 20 of the Dark Blue workbook.) In the scale of D minor, D is the first note and B flat is the sixth note.
