The third of Alan Gray's sonatas is dedicated to Walter Parratt and maintains the excellence of the previous two, reviewed in June 2011 and September 2013. No.3 begins with a tuneful Allegro Moderato Prelude. The second movement is 'Air with Variations of which there are four, the last involving some double pedalling, but at a Iento marking this present few problems.
The Finale is the most difficult of the movements, beginning an eight-bar pedal solo taking one across the board from top F down. The composer does say that 'this passage .. . may, if preferred, be played with the left hand. ' However, parts of it reappear later when there is no choice. It is an invigorating movement which would make a good concluding voluntary.
